Chief Health Officer visits the Central West

Dr Marianne Gale, Queensland Health’s Chief Health Officer and Deputy Director-General of
Population Health, visited the Central West region on 30 April and 1 May.

During Dr Gale’s visit, she met with patients and staff at Muttaburra Primary Health Centre, Longreach Family Medical Practice, and much of Longreach Hospital including the:

  • renal unit
  • administration area
  • day procedure unit
  • maternity ward
  • Pathology lab

Central West Health Executive Director of Medical Services Dr David Walker said it was a great chance for Dr Gale to get a feel for the health service, and our unique opportunities and challenges.

“I think it would be fair to say that Dr Gale was very impressed with what we offer our patients, and the friendliness of our staff and communities,” Dr Walker said.

“Dr Gale was also kind enough to present our Friday education session to medical officers across the district, covering a range of topics including influenza and the new RSV vaccination.

“She also reiterated the importance of trying to prevent rather than just treat chronic disease, and the important ‘upstream’ impact this has on hospitalisations down the track.”
