The Alpha Multipurpose Health Service (MPHS) is celebrating a decade of delivering high-quality healthcare closer to home, marking 10 years since the opening of the facility that has become a cornerstone of health services for Alpha and surrounding communities.

The current $17.5 million Alpha MPHS officially opened in June 2016, replacing the original Alpha Hospital, which had served the community since 1931 and underwent a number of expansions and additions over its long history.

Over the past decade, the facility has provided a broad range of hospital, primary healthcare, aged care, emergency and telehealth services, ensuring residents can access essential healthcare without leaving their community.

Alpha MPHS Director of Nursing George Mihai said the anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on the important role the service played in supporting the health and wellbeing of residents.

"For the past 10 years, Alpha MPHS has been much more than a healthcare facility. It has been a vital community asset, providing quality care close to home and giving local residents the confidence that support is available when they need it most,’’ he said.

"Access to healthcare in rural and remote communities can be challenging, which is why facilities like Alpha MPHS are so important.

“Having local services means people can receive care in familiar surroundings, close to their family, friends and support networks.

"The ability to provide a range of inpatient, emergency, primary healthcare and aged care services locally helps improve health outcomes and strengthens the resilience of our community."

The MPHS is a nurse-led facility with medical officer support from Barcaldine MPHS and offers two inpatient beds, two short-stay beds and two resuscitation beds.

An attached residential aged care unit provides four beds, allowing local residents requiring residential care to remain in Alpha and maintain important connections with family and friends.

Central West Hospital and Health Service Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery Troy Lane acknowledged the staff and community who had contributed to Alpha MPHS over the past decade.

“I am incredibly proud of the care our team at Alpha delivers every day, and grateful to the many staff, community members, volunteers and partner organisations who have supported the service over the past 10 years,” he said.

“The strength of the MPHS model is its ability to bring a range of health services together around the needs of the local community, combining locally delivered care with visiting clinicians, specialist services and telehealth.

“This collaborative approach helps residents access care closer to home, reducing the need to travel long distances for appointments and ongoing treatment.”

Alpha MPHS provides regular visiting medical and allied health services, including a General Practice clinic generally available three days each week through a visiting doctor from Barcaldine.

Telehealth consultations are also available when an in-person clinic cannot be provided.

The service also operates a hospital-based ambulance available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, supported by nurses, operational staff and dedicated volunteer drivers.

Mr Lane said the facility's 10-year milestone was a celebration of both healthcare excellence and community partnership.

"This anniversary belongs not only to our staff but to the entire Alpha community,’’ he said.

“The strong relationship between the health service and local residents has been fundamental to our success, and we look forward to continuing to serve the community for many years to come."
