Work has started on an $8.5 million upgrade of Longreach Hospital

The Work Includes:

  • Maternity to be re-located to the first floor of the hospital
  • Mechanical upgrade of air-conditioning
  • New day surgery unit
  • New medical imaging department which includes the installation of a CT scanner – a first for the Central West that will save about 50 people a month a trip outside the region to have their scans.

The entire upgrade is expected to take 46 weeks – (20 March 2017 – 25 January 2018)

Hutchinson Builders is the contractor for the upgrade.

The upgrading works have been planned in stages so as to minimise disruption to patients, visitors, staff and to hospital services in general.

The community will be updated as to the details of each stage as they occur.

How will this impact upon you as a consumer?

  • There will be no changes to our current maternity services and these will continue as per normal.
  • Emergency Department services will not change.
  • Emergency surgery, including caesareans, will continue unchanged.
  • Medical imaging services will continue unchanged.
  • Cardiac stress tests will continue unchanged.
  • Dental services will continue unchanged.
  • Patients requiring urgent – but non-emergency – surgery, will be treated at another facility and the health service will arrange this as required.
  • Some non-urgent elective surgery procedures may need to be rescheduled to later in the year. The health service will contact affected patients individually to reschedule as required.
  • All other hospital services will continue unchanged.
